Linking data from Microsoft Excel to Microsoft Powerpoint

This is going to be a bit hard to explain...

I am currently working on Excel Powerpoint. I have a few graphs on the powerpoint page that are linked to data on Excel. One of the graphs is a horizontal bar graph.

The data is coming from Spreadsheet A (let's call it). When I go to the graph, click on design, and then select data, a totally different spreadsheet, (call it Spreadsheet B), which is totally irrelevant to the graph, pops up. Spreadsheet A does not pop up at all.

The data from this graph used to come from Spreadsheet B, but no longer does. Yet it still automatically pops up.

I no longer want Spreadsheet B to pop up, only Spreadsheet A.

Any ideas on why this is happening and how to fix it??
 
Can I suggest that you delete the offending graph in the PowerPoint presentation, go to Spreadsheet A and select the graph you require and then copy and paste link that graph into the PowerPoint presentation.

This happens more often, as PowerPoint can keep a hidden link to the original Excel file even after switching the data source.
PowerPoint embeds a “data link” in the chart. Even if you point it to Spreadsheet A, it may still reference Spreadsheet B. Clicking Edit Data → Edit Data in Excel can open the old file.
To Fix it:
  1. break the old link: file > info > edit links to files > select spreadsheet B > break link. save and reopen.
  2. relink the chart: right-click chart > edit data > edit data in excel, make sure it opens spreadsheet A. save both files together.
  3. *optional: check file > options > advanced > general > update automatic links at open to control refresh prompts.
If you update charts often, native linking can get unstable, especially when files move or are renamed. I can truly feel that, as I had quite the same issue myself. I ended up using an Excel-PowerPoint add-in (Chartrics) that keeps links stable and avoids the need to break and rebuild them. Hopefully, this tips make managing your charts a bit easier.
