in window Choose fields to add to report the box is checked. On left, the value fields are listed next to a window Drop Value Fields Here. When dragged into it the cells remain empty. ............ Excel 2010 family on Win 10 laptop

Looks like you have Classic PivotTable layout ticked in you PivotTable options. That's fine. I have no problem dragging and dropping. See attached. Windows 10, Excel 2010.

I'm experienced with Excel, but have never used pivot tables. Your results are what I expected. I have 2 questions. 1) I don't see Classic PivotTable layout ticked in my PivotTable options. How I change the option? 2) Apparently, you were able to drag your fields and I cannot. Why is that? We're both running Windows 10, Excel 2010.

Select the pivot table, right-click, Pivot Table Options>Display and you will see a checkbox there.

You said:

The default appearance is:

where I see no 'Drop Value Fields Here', but if I switch to Classic View I do:

so I presumed that's what you were seeing.
On dragging Friends into that area I got:

Is this significantly different from what you're seeing?

To change the option, as xld pointed out:

I don't know!
